Develop a 3 to 4 page paper, written to your organization’s leadership team, addressing your selected national healthcare issue

The Quadruple Aim provides broad categories of goals to pursue to maintain and improve healthcare. Within each goal are many issues that, if addressed successfully, may have a positive impact on outcomes. For example, healthcare leaders are being tasked to shift from an emphasis on disease management often provided in an acute care setting to health promotion and disease prevention delivered in primary care settings.

Efforts in this area can have significant positive impacts by reducing the need for primary healthcare and by reducing the stress on the healthcare system.

Changes in the industry only serve to stress what has always been true; namely, that the healthcare field has always faced significant challenges, and that goals to improve healthcare will always involve multiple stakeholders. This should not seem surprising given the circumstances. Indeed, when a growing population needs care, there are factors involved such as the demands of providing that care and the rising costs associated with healthcare.

Generally, it is not surprising that the field of healthcare is an industry facing multifaceted issues that evolve over time.

In this module’s Discussion, you reviewed some healthcare issues/stressors and selected one for further review. For this Assignment, you will consider in more detail the healthcare issue/stressor you selected. You will also review research that addresses the issue/stressor and write a white paper to your organization’s leadership that addresses the issue/stressor you selected.

To Prepare:

  • Review the national healthcare issues/stressors presented in the Resources and reflect on the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected for study.
  • Reflect on the feedback you received from your colleagues on your Discussion post for the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected.
  • Identify and review two additional scholarly resources (not included in the Resources for this module) that focus on change strategies implemented by healthcare organizations to address your selected national healthcare issue/stressor.

The Assignment (3-4 Pages):

Analysis of a Pertinent Healthcare Issue

Expert Answer and Explanation

COVID-19 Restrictions in Nursing Homes

Since the onset of COVID-19, there have been drastic changes in operations and the restrictions to curb the issue. Healthcare organizations are mandated to ensure a strict code of conduct that is essential towards the achievement of low infection rates and limit the deaths associated with the disease (Chen et al., 2020). Nursing homes are associated with the elderly in the community, who are the most vulnerable population due to their low immune system. The increased susceptibility to the disease has led to the creation of numerous restrictions affecting operations of the home and other related entities.

Describe the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected and its impact on your organization. Use organizational data to quantify the impact (if necessary, seek assistance from leadership or appropriate stakeholders in your organization)

The selected healthcare issue is the presence of COVID-19 and how it has affected the nursing homes. The COVID-19 is a flu-like disease that leads to severe and life-threatening symptoms in the victims. The severity of the symptoms varies from one person to another, contingent on a number of factors (Fallon et al., 2020). Issues such as age, immune system, and other underlying issues that the patent is dealing with at the moment.

Nursing homes constitute the elderly population who have a reduced immune system and have underlying issues that make them highly susceptible to the disease. In retaliation, the COVID-19 disease has led to the creation of multiple rules and regulations that have restricted the normal operation of the facility. The restrictions are focused on the residents, the nurses, and the visitors who may wish to visit their loved ones.

One of the restrictions put in place for the residents is that they are not allowed out of their rooms and cannot freely socialize with each other. The mode of medication has been focused on psychotropic medications, which are mainly used for depression (Fallon et al., 2020). The restriction has also led to issues for the residents, such as an increase in patient falls for being confined in their rooms for longer periods.

With regards to the nurses and other health providers, it is mandated that they make use of full-body PPEs while attending to patients and change them prior to entering a different resident room (McGilton et al., 2020). The restriction and measures aim to minimize the chances of contact and spread of the virus to other patients and the nurses offering the care.

There is also increased consumption of telehealth services that reduce direct nurse-patient contact. Telehealth services increase the healthcare services while at the same time mitigating chance encounter and possible spread of the virus. There is a need for a mandatory 14-day quarantine in a different room without a roommate during transfers or office visits.

Family members are not allowed visitations to their kin unless the resident is transitioning, and death is imminent (McGilton et al., 2020). Even then, the visit is only limited to a single visitor who has to meet all the required standards set by the organization regarding visitation and meeting with patients.

Provide a brief summary of the two articles you reviewed from outside resources on the national healthcare issue/stressor. Explain how the healthcare issue/stressor is being addressed in other organizations

One of the articles reviewed includes the article by Katarzyna Szczerbińska, which focused on the possibility that nursing homes would have done better before the disease became so severe. According to the article, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reported that 66% of all the deaths related to COVID-19 in the country were from the residents of long-term care facilities.

The article iterates on the concept that the nursing homes were not prepared for the outbreak, and there were limited measures on the impact of the disease and the available control measures (Szczerbińska, 2020). Following the high incidence rates, the CDC developed proper recommendations that can be used by LTC facilities to keep CVID-19 from entering the facility and affecting the residents.

These measures have since been adopted by most nursing homes and have also been incorporated with additional measures specific to the facility (Szczerbińska, 2020). The article iterates on the measures that are effective for the nursing homes and their benefit in creating preparedness for a possible second wave of the disease.

The second article by Verbeek et al. (2020) focuses on the measures required before allowing visitors back to the nursing homes when the pandemic is still on the rise, and the vulnerable residents are still susceptible to the disease. The objective of the research is in line with the prevention and control of the infections related to COVID-19 among nursing homes all over the world by implementing restrictive measures (Verbeek et al., 2020).

The article iterates on the importance of having strict measures and guidelines that restrict visitation to the nursing homes in the bid to reduce the infection rate and possibly contain the disease. The statistics from the article depict that between 19% and 72% of the individual who died due to the COVID-19 pandemic were residents of nursing homes (Verbeek et al., 2020).

The overview describes the impact that the disease had on the population and how visitation was among the leading cause for the surge. The implementation of restrictive measures is important for the organization, which has largely adopted the measure over time and restricted visits to the facilities.

Summarize the strategies used to address the organizational impact of national healthcare issues/stressors presented in the scholarly resources you selected. Explain how they may impact your organization both positively and negatively. Be specific and provide examples

Based on the articles, there are various ways in which the impacts related to COVID-19 can be mitigated or addressed. Szczerbińska (2020) focuses on the use of technology, such as e-learning and telehealth, to reduce contact between burse and patients. Increasing the human resource is also important where specific nurses are assigned to patients or resident rooms other than having one nurse rotating from one room to another. The article equally emphasizes the need for the nurses to be ethical and empathetic to the patients.

The second article by Verbeek et al. (2020) is focused on the need to restrict visitation, which is the main cause of COVID-19 incidences in the healthcare sector. The article conducts research that informs on the best restrictions that the nursing homes can implement to reduce the possibility of patients getting into contact with infected visitors and spreading the disease to other residents.

These restrictions can impact an organization both in a positive and negative manner. For instance, the nursing home has to be able to afford the purchasing of PPEs that will be used by the nurses as they encounter the residents. However, the measures will benefit as they will reduce the number of infections and, by extension, the mortality rates.

Conclusion

Nursing homes house some of the most vulnerable individuals within the society, and any infections have the potential to leave devastating effects. Effective measures to limit the spread of the disease among the residents are important for attaining better care for the residents. The main aspect is to come up with restrictions that limit interactions, encounters, and direct socialization between the various individuals in the nursing homes.
