Public Health Issue

The advent of the social media has helped improve social connections, allowing individuals from various parts of the world to socialize and to interact with each other. For adolescents, the social media has become a crucial tool for accessing entertaining content including updates on local and international issues. While users of social media enjoy using the different social platforms including Snapchat which is popular among adolescents, these platforms pose the risk of digital addiction considering that they cause a constant urge for one to skim through their devices as they search for interesting or entertaining content.

This is a major concern because uncontrolled use of these platforms is associated with negative mental health outcomes, ranging from anxiety to depression (Gupta, Jogdand, & Kumar, 2022). Addiction to social media including its impact on users’ psychiatric health is something that researchers are yet to comprehensively explore.  This underscores the need to examine why the excessive use of social media is prevalent among adolescents, and how it affects adolescents’ mental health.

The Context or Background of the Health Care Issue

The adolescent age is characterized by rapid change in one’s cognitive and physical developmental status. During this phase in one’s life, one may seek validation from peers, making them vulnerable to social media by causing them to spend hours on social media platforms as they seek likes and positive comments from other users. Seeking likes coupled by the failure to receive adequate feedback from peers creates pressure, resulting to anxiety and stress. Surprisingly, positive validation from friends poses the risk of addiction because it causes an increase in the amount of time one spends on phone, interfering with the quality of one’s sleep during bedtime. With compromised quality of sleep, one may develop anxiety, and experience impaired cognitive development.

The issue pertaining to the mental health impact of the social media dependence problem has attracted the attention of psychological experts and researchers, some of who have made attempts to study the relationship between two.  In their study in which they sought to determine the link between social media use and mental health outcomes in teenagers, for instance, Bozzola et al. (2022) confirmed this this relationship. They also cited various factors linked to overuse of social media including headache and cognitive issues.

The Impact of the Health Care Issue on Health, Health Care, and Professional Field

The adolescents who excessively use the social media are at increased risk of experiencing slow cognitive and physical development because the social media use affects various aspects of adolescent’s life. First, the overuse of the social media is associated with sedentary lifestyle which exposes one to the risk of gaining extra body weight. Because excessive weight poses the risk of cardiovascular conditions and other illnesses, an adolescent risk developing stress if they spend too much time using the social media.

The other way of understanding the mental health implications of social media is examining how it affects the quality of sleep. Procrastination during bedtime, which is a problem linked to the use of the social media, can compromise the quality of one’s sleep. For an adolescent that is still experiencing mental health growth, the lack of adequate sleep can hamper this growth. In fact, it has the potential of causing undesirable health outcomes including depression (Khalaf et al., 2023).

One’s risk of developing a depressive disorder may also stem from comparing one’s lifestyle including body image with the lifestyle of other social media users. The pressure that stems from making these comparisons can cause stress, resulting to depression. Additionally, lack of positive response from friends or peers can be a risk factor for various mental health issues including anxiety.

Strategy for Successful Resolution of the Health Care Issue

Resolution of the adolescents’ dependence on social media is crucial in addressing its mental health impact on this population. One of the main reasons why most adolescents are hooked to the social media is the lack of adolescents’ awareness of the health impact of the social media. Thus, an intervention in which adolescents receive education on the dangers of social media addiction can help improve social media avoidance among younger users.

The successful implementation of this intervention, however, depends on the support of parents, teachers and school administrators including the social media firms. For their part, these firms may introduce new innovations including some that restrict the usage that extends over a specified duration of time (Vaingankar et al., 2022). With collective effort, it is possible to reduce the problem of social media addiction including its psychiatric effect.

Conclusion

In overview, overdependence on social media is a public health crisis considering that it mentally affects adolescents, compromising their cognitive and physical development. An existing body of research examines the relationship between these variables, with most studies showing that indeed, excessive use of social platforms is associated with poor adolescent health outcomes. The recommended strategy for resolving this problem involves carrying out public education with emphasis on sensitizing adolescents on the risks of social media addiction.
