Holistic care refers to approaches and interventions that address the needs of the whole person: body, mind, emotion, and spirit.
Discussion Prompt:
Holistic care refers to approaches and interventions that address the needs of the whole person: body, mind, emotion, and spirit. Consider the following case study:
You are caring for a first-time mother in a health clinic. While assessing the woman, you notice she is becoming visibly upset. When you ask, she notes that her mother, with whom she was very close, died last year and that she really would have loved to have shared this pregnancy with her. You empathize with the patient, as your own mother just died 6 months ago. She also notes that she and her partner have been bickering a lot lately on top of her feeling generally sore, tired, and overwhelmed.
Define holistic care in your own words. Describe four ways you can implement a holistic nursing approach to care and facilitate healing. In addition, you may consider the intersection of holistic care and caritas principles from Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring/Caring Science from Week 1.

Sample Expert Answer and Explanation
Holistic care refers to supportive approaches to caring for the patients as a whole person. Holistic care involves treating the illness through medications and treating them physically, emotionally, mentally, physiologically, and spiritually (Frisch, 2019). A care provider can provide wholesome medication and treatment through holistic care. Different ways can be used to implement a holistic nursing approach to care and, after that, facilitate healing.
One of the strategies a nurse can use is inclusivity in patient care delivery. Patient inclusion is important since it enables proper nurse-to-patient interactions, improving the nature of care delivery. Including the patient in the diagnosis the process can help improve the correlation between the provided medication and the patient’s preferences.
The second strategy for providing holistic care is patient education, which can help ensure that the patient understands personal care and medication adherence. Educating the patient on the importance of their medication promotes good health (Frisch, 2019). The third strategy is to focus on wellness coaching. The strategy aims to enable the patient to become aware of ways to help improve Nurses can coach the patient on lifestyle habits that protect them from certain diseases by watching on their diet, exercising, avoiding cigarette smoking, and using alcohol (Frisch, 2019). The fourth strategy to implement a holistic nursing approach is including family in patient care. Including family can help create a conducive patient environment, making recovery efficient (Frisch, 2019).
In her theory of human caring, Jean Watson explains the importance of caring for patients through her Caritas principles. Jean Watson explains that caring helps promote good health to the patient mentally, physically, psychologically, socially, and emotionally. Jean Watson explains that we can care for our patients by listening and taking care of what they need, encouraging them with activities they engage in, and giving attention when they need it (Gunawan, 2022)

- Rural health clinic
- Emergency department
- Urgency care
- Community health center

Sample Expert Answer and Explanation
One of the environments where advanced practice registered nurses can practice is within the family practice setting. Family practice is a medical specialty that focuses on providing care to individual patients or their overall family setup. APRNs can practice by providing care to individuals and their families to ensure proper and efficient care delivery processes are met.
Regardless of the setting in which care is administered, there is an issue of cost and affordability. There are different issues that might affect the overall revenue in relation to the family practice. Joel (2017) provides various conditions that might affect revenue in care settings. There are several conditions that can apply in the family practice setting and impact the revenue of the setting.
One of the hospitals acquired conditions that affect the family practice are falls and trauma (Joel, 2017, p. 169). Patient falls are a major issue and can affect the cost of medication and the role that the healthcare facility has in relation to caring for the patient. Other than leading to additional stay within the facility, falls and trauma can also lead to legal issues that might require the facility to restitute the patient and any other person involved.
The other condition that affects the family practice setting is blood incompatibility (Joel, 2017, p. 169). While family members are related and have a common ancestry, they do not always have the same blood type. Blood incompatibility requires additional revenue to be used, which increases the financial burden. These conditions can interfere with how an APN provides care as they will be required to first focus on creating a safe environment before administering care.
