Module 2 Closed Research Theme Reading Check-In
Directions
To prepare for your writing projects in this class, you will be expected, at regular intervals, to read through some of the closed research theme readings selected by your instructor for this section. By the time you are working on your research project in the second half of the class, you will have become familiar with the closed research theme readings for this class and will have a strong basis for your independent research and your final argument paper.
For this check-in, please do the following:
- Select TWO closed research theme readings from the closed research theme list for this class (in Modules). One of the readings you select may be the one you answered questions about in the exercise Getting Familiar with the Course and Closed Research Theme in Module 1 and/or the reading you intend to write about for Writing Project 1: Summary and Response. Read both readings you selected.
- Click the Submit Assignment button.
- In the text entry box for this assignment, write or copy the titles of the readings you selected. Then answer at least ONE of the following questions. Please write a total of at least 50 words, not counting the reading titles. You may write more!
- Which reading did you find most interesting? Why?
- Which reading did you find most troubling or concerning? Why?
- Which reading would you recommend to someone outside this class? Why?
- Write at least one question you have about one or both readings.
- If you prefer, you can type your answers in a Word file and upload your file.
- When done, click the Submit Assignment button.
You must read two of the closed research theme readings and respond to the check-in questions before proceeding to the M02 Discussion.
Submitting your Assignment
- Find the “Choose a submission type” section at the bottom of this assignment page (if this section is not displayed, the submission type has been chosen for you). Choose your submission type from the options listed there.
- Complete the assignment for the chosen Submission Type.
- Click the Submit Assignment button to submit.
Module 2 Discussion: Did You Hear What They Said About That?
For this online discussion, you will:
- Analyze the “They Say” in a closed research theme reading of your choice, based on your understanding chapters assigned so far in “They Say / I Say”
- Provide an initial post identifying and analyzing two “They Say” moves in one of our closed research theme readings
- Respond to at least two peers.
To prepare:
- Read all reading assignments from “They Say / I Say” in this module
- Complete the M02 Closed Research Theme Reading Check-In
Module 2 Initial Post
Start a new thread in this board and respond to the following prompt. Click the Post Reply button to submit your initial post:
First, select and read any closed research theme reading (for the list of readings, click the Modules link and scroll to find the Module entitled “Closed Research Theme”). In your initial post, Identify your selected reading by full title and author. Then, identify at least 2 “They Say” moves in the reading. (“They Say” moves are places in the closed research theme reading where the author quotes or summarizes the ideas of another person, group, or source AND responds to it in some way.)
Next, respond to at least 1 “Looking Deeply” question AND 1 “Looking Broadly” question below.
Looking Deeply:
- How effective / objective / accurate / useful / and/or appropriate are the “They Say” moves? Explain why or why not.
- Why do you think the author quoted, summarized, or referred to the ideas of these people or sources? How does it add to the writing as a whole?
- What kind of sources do the “They Say” moves identified refer to? (Examples: Experts? Celebrities? Politicians? Everyday people? A print source, such as a magazine or newspaper? Maybe unidentified “some people say” sources, or a mix of types? Some other kinds of source?) How does the type of sources referred to in the “They Say” moves support or detract from the point the author is making?
Looking Broadly:
- Comment on what “conversation” you see this closed research theme reading as participating in. What specific issue or question or conversation within our broad topic of the class’s Closed Research Theme Question is the reading responding to? (There may be hints in the title, the “They Says” that are used to frame the writing, or the conclusions the author comes to.)
- What questions do you have in response to this closed research theme reading? What would you ask the author, if you could? What would you like to understand better or know more about regarding the conversation? What are you skeptical about or doubt in the reading and why? NOTE: be sure to ask questions, rather than make statements or assertions (though you are welcome to explain your questions).
- Consider other closed research theme readings you have read so far (for the M01 Exercise and/or the M02 Closed Research Theme check-in). What connections or disconnects do you notice between the reading you are analyzing for this discussion board and other closed research theme reading? Do the two readings see the issue in a similar or a different way? Do they seem to “talk” to each other or past each other? Explain your reasoning and be sure to identify the second reading by author and title.
Your Module 2 initial post should be at least 150 original words.
Module 2 Responses
Respond to 2 or more posts made by your classmates. To respond to a peer, click the Reply button underneath that peer’s post. After you’ve written your response, click the Post Reply button to submit your response.
Possible ways to respond or questions to answer include:
- Comment on your peer’s analysis of the “They Says.” You may state what was insightful or worked well, or add additional explanations or insights to your peer’s analysis, or respectfully disagree with your peer’s analysis. Provide reasons and examples.
- Make a connection between a reading you analyzed and a reading one of your peers analyzed.
- If you don’t understand a particular point made by a peer or are curious about their analysis, you could ask a clarifying question.
- Looking at the discussion as a whole, do you see any themes emerging? What big (or little) questions are writers of our closed research theme readings trying to answer? Which questions interest you most?
- Answer a question a peer asked in their initial post.
- Answer a question a peer asked you or respond to a comment they made on your initial post.
- Add any new insights you have on “They Say” moves as a result of this discussion.
Altogether, your Module 2 posts (initial post and at least 2 responses) should add up to at least 300 words. All posts are due by the end of Module 2.
