Discussion Prompt
Find a concept within Watsons Theory of Caring and a similar concept within any other nursing theory. Compare the two concepts for similarities and differences. Illustrate how a person reading about a theory can be influenced in their understanding of a theory if they have a different definition of a concept than the author.
Expert Answer and Explanation
Nursing theories are frameworks that can be used to help provide a more in-depth understanding of issues around the healthcare setting. Nurses can make use of the theory to create an efficient environment and determine appropriate responses to certain healthcare issues (Hurlock-Chorostecki, 1999). The theories can also be used to help provide perspective concerning different nursing roles and responsibilities. An understanding of the different processes can help ensure greater patient outcomes. The concepts within Watson’s human caring can be correlated with those identified from Orem’s theory (Hurlock-Chorostecki, 1999).
The two theories provide valuable insights as it pertains to nursing and caring for patients within the healthcare environment. The two theories have a major impact on the nature in which modern care is provided to patients. The similarity between the Watson Theory and Orem theory is that they have a common goal of ensuring patient outcomes. The core component identified in Watson’s theory is caring while the component identified in Orem’s theory is nurse competency. The two components are different yet correlated.
Concerning the caring component, Watson focuses on the need to care for patients as it is the basic moral ideal for any nurse (Watson, 2022). Nurses ought to demonstrate holistic care that enhances, preserves, and protects patient outcomes. Orem on the other hand focuses on nursing skills and roles by emphasizing the education system and nursing environment. Ensuring that nurses are academically qualified to deal with patients is a major strategy to ensure positive patient outcomes (Hurlock-Chorostecki, 1999). Reading the concepts provides a reader with a more in-depth understanding of nursing roles and how they can be used to improve patient outcomes.

Week 5: Discussion Question – Personal Theory Improvement
Discussion Prompt
Use the theory that you developed in week two. Improve it by using the information you have obtained in the intervening weeks. Use the Conceptual – Theoretical – Empirical Model (CTE) to link the operational definitions with the empirical indicators with the theoretical concepts and the conceptual model components. Post your revised theory and explain how you would measure the concepts and proposition in a research study.
Expert Answer and Explanation
The personal theory that I created was the theory of professional law which states that a professional that adheres to their code of conduct and ensures that their scope of practice is met, can be able to avert negative consequences to them and their clients. The theory can be adapted into the Conceptual-theory-empirical (CTE) structure to ensure that it correlates with the Roy Adaptation Model (Attaallah et al., 2021). Through the use of the CTE, the operational definitions of the theory can be tied to the empirical indicators, conceptual model components, and theoretical concepts. To begin with, the conceptual model components focus on understanding the contents of the model in a detailed manner.
The components of the personal theory focus on nurses, scope, and patient outcome as the main components, but can also include patients to provide more specificity (Attaallah et al., 2021). Concerning the theoretical model, the personal theory assumes that the healthcare sector is not perfect and is constantly in the process of ensuring that all the care processes are working as they are required. As a result, there is a need for constant adherence to professional duty.
Concerning the empirical aspect of the theory entails the components that can be sued to help evaluate and observe the theory. In my theory, the empirical component has been included in terms of the negative consequences that nurses can incur if they do not adhere to the professional scope of practice (Attaallah et al., 2021). The information can be analyzed based on the outcome of care and better patient outcome.
In this regard the revised definition of the personal theory can be, “a professional that adheres to their code of conduct and ensures that their scope of practice is met, can be able to avert negative consequences to them and to the patients they serve.” The inclusion of the patients helps create a more specific theory in line with the CTE model.

Week 6: Discussion Question 1 – Metaparadigm of Nursing
Discussion Prompt
Link the theory you developed in Weeks 2 and 5 with the Metaparadigm of Nursing. Each of the elements of the Metaparadigm should be represented in your theory. Revise your theory if necessary to include each of the components of the Metaparadigm.
Expert Answer and Explanation
In both weeks 2 and 5, I developed the theory of professional duty which states that a professional that adheres to their code of conduct and ensures that their scope of practice is met, can be able to avert negative consequences to them and their clients. The theory can be linked to the four components of the metaparadigm of nursing. Metaparadigms of nursing includes person, health, environment, and nursing (Nikfarid et al., 2018). The metaparadigms are focused on the patient who is the overall recipient of care. The theory of professional duty can be correlated with each element of the Metaparadigms of nursing.
To begin with, theory can be related to the “person” element as it focuses on how nurses have an obligation to be dutiful to the patient. By focusing on the patient, the professional can avert negative consequences. Secondly, the theory can be correlated with the element of health. The concept of health focuses on the patient and how they are recovering. In this case, the scope of professionalism focuses on the health of the patient and how it can be improved (Nikfarid et al., 2018).
The third element is the environment. The theory can also be correlated with the environment in the sense that a nurse has to constantly ensure patients are addressed to create a healing environment (Nikfarid et al., 2018). Through the attainment of one’s scope and duties, the nurse has by extension facilitated a healing environment for the patient. The last component of the Metaparadigms of nursing is nursing. Nurses are required to follow their scope and administer care to those in need. The theory leverages the role of a nurse and the need to ensure that they meet their purpose and objectives.

Week 6: Discussion Question 2 – Metaparadigm & Watson
Discussion Prompt
Take one component in the Metaparadigm of Nursing, identify and discuss the concept or concepts of Watson’s Theory of Caring that support that Watson wrote a theory of nursing based on the criteria established in the Metaparadigm of Nursing.
Expert Answer and Explanation
Metaparadigms of nursing includes the elements of a person, health, environment, and nursing (Nikfarid et al., 2018). The metaparadigms are focused on the patient who is the overall recipient of care. One of the main elements of the metaparadigm is the environment. The element focuses on the need for care providers to provide a safe and conducive environment for patients’ treatment and recovery. The environment is a key element for a theory as all the processes and other elements have to be facilitated by the environment.
In retrospect, the environment needs to be efficient, and safe, and meet the needs of both the nurse and the patient (Nikfarid et al., 2018). Different strategies can be used to create a conducive environment and the nurse has to make informed decisions based on patient needs and autonomy. Be that as it may, the Watson theory of caring can be correlated with the environmental metaparadigm of nursing.
In the Theory of human caring, Watson places a great deal of emphasis on a healing and caring environment (Nikfarid et al., 2018). The theory contends that nurses have the mandate to ensure that the available environment is able to facilitate a mood of caring and healing. Accordingly, the environment has to contain external and internal factors that can create a means by which a patient can actualize their innate self-healing ability.
Nurses by themselves are part of the environment and can be perceived as the external factors that facilitate the healing process (Nikfarid et al., 2018). A patient would be able to have hope in healing when they can see a nurse within their vicinity checking up on them and their vitals. The proof creates reassurance for the patient. Watson perceives the environment from the perspective of what a nurse can offer and its impact on the patient.
